The 2020 Charity Ball Silent Auction is both honored and thrilled to have received a donation from world-renowned aviation artist Gary Velasco. Mr. Velasco is one of the most sought-after restored aircraft nose artists in the country. He specializes in vintage nose art from the 20th Century and his work can be seen on various historic airplanes around the country. Mr. Velasco's one-of-a-kind artwork donation will be unveiled at our 2020 Charity Ball Silent Auction on March 21st.

This is an original check, signed ‘'Orville Wright”. An aviation pioneer, Orville Wright piloted the first powered aircraft, which he developed with his older brother Wilbur, at Kitty Hawk in 1903. Autographs of either Wright brother are a staple of many of the great collections. The check is for the sum of $7.50, payable to the Ohio Bell Telephone Company. The check is drawn on The City National Bank and is dated on March 4, 1922. The signature is bold and in black ink. The check is artfully framed with a photographic portrait of Orville Wright. Below the check is one of the most iconic photographs ever taken of the Wright brothers. Depicted in the photograph is the Wright Flyer, as it lifts off for the first time. Orville is positioned at the controls, with Wilbur running alongside. The photograph was taken at Kitty Hawk, in 1903. The check has a vertical fold, cancellation holes and marks. Check measures 7.7 x 19.5cm, and is dated March 4, 1922. Framed Size: 21" H x 29 1/2" W x 1" D

Original dust jacket and custom archival slipcase. This first edition, third printing of Rickenbacker is signed by the famous pilot on the first free end page and reads, “Christmas 1967 Eddie Rickenbacker 1967.” In addition to the inscription, Rickenbacker gifted the book to Dan Doughty from “Ed” and placed a Christmas sticker above his signature. The book retains its original dust jacket featuring a portrait of Rickenbacker in front of fighter planes. The book is presented in a complimentary blue custom archival slipcase. Overall very good condition. The signature on the first free end page is in clear, dark marker and the Christmas sticker is still well-pasted down. The black and blue boards featuring Rickenbacker’s initials are slightly sunned along the top and bottom edges. The binding is partially loose, but otherwise the boards are in very good condition. The pages are internally clean and bright. The book’s original dust jacket is in very good condition with only one clipped corner and it is now protected by a mylar cover. The book is housed in a custom made archival blue slipcase adorned with a photo of a young Rickenbacker in front of a fighter plane. Dimensions: 9.75” H x 6.75” W x 2.5” D (with slipcase)

This war-dated Army commission for Second Lieutenant Joseph Audenned is signed by Abraham Lincoln. The signature is accompanied by a reproduction photograph of Lincoln in 1863. The original commission was signed by Lincoln on September 9, 1861 and assigns Audenned to the famed 1st Regiment of the U.S. Cavalry. This original signed document is in overall good condition for its age. The signed document shows typical indications of age including rippling and creases, as well as ink and seal transfer from where the document was folded against itself. The signature at bottom is written in ink and is legible despite minor discoloration and fading. There is some foxing along the right side and the original seal is slightly lifting. Otherwise, the document has no tears or loss. Framed dimensions: 31 ⅞” H x 42 ½” W x 1” D

Carl "Tooey" Spaatz signed and inscribed World War II photograph surrounded by authentic WWII vintage Air Corps patches representing all the relevant units of the early Air Corps and Air Force. Spaatz became the first Chief of Staff of the independent U.S. Air Force in 1947. The photograph is signed in black ink: “To Larry Hansen/ In appreciation for/ carrying out with/ efficiency a highly/ important assignment./Tooey Spaatz”. The signature is in the lower left corner of photograph, and extends into the bottom margin. Photographic portrait is in very good condition. Signature is legible, with very little fading of the ink. Framed dimensions: 28 3/4" H x 24" W x 2" D.

Vintage single bookend, most likely used as doorstop or paperweight. Reflects a shallow relief of "The Spirit of St. Louis" with Charles Lindbergh at center. Reminiscent of Lindbergh's famous flight from New York to Paris. Relief is detailed and intricate. Overall good condition. Some scuffs visible. Back side has "3G" written in black marker. "Spirit of St. Louis" is clearly visible on front bottom. Dimensions: 5 1/2" H x 4 3/4" W x 2 1/4" D. This book is the "Collector's Edition" limited printing of Lindbergh: His Story in Pictures, numbered 70 of only 250 copies signed by both author and publisher. This printing was issued with an original envelope actually carried by Lindbergh on his first International Air Mail Flight from Miami to the Canal Zone on the opening of the Pan-American Airways. Envelope is tipped to front paste-down.
